Default The Honeymoon Safari (poor Guides joke I never find amusing)

Taken this September in the Khwai concession, Botswana.

Getting a clear shot of this 'loving' couple was difficult at times. They kept insisting on facing the wrong direction.

For this image, I was laying down on the floor of the vehicle, where it has no side. This images with give you an idea of where I was http://www.thesafariphotographer.com...naRaw-1175.jpg

    Techs:

    1d mark IV
    70-200 @ 195mm
    1/1600 @f4.5
    ISO250

Hi Russell, nice mating lion pic, lots of power in this image. Your lower angle certainly helps the BG, as well as the perspective on the lions, specially the male. Love the male's snarl, and his bared teeth, as well as his sweeping mane. Would like a little more space on the top if you have it. Any reason for using the shallow DOF of f4.5 at iso250 as opposed to a higher iso and more depth?
    thanks for sharing..
    Cheers

Captured very well. Wind blown mane and expressions are great elements. OOF grass/branch above lioness eye is a slight distraction, maybe town it down if not comfortable with removing it. Agree with a little more up top if you have it. Well done.

Very dramatic action. Would clean up the obvious cloning along the bottom.

    Thanks for all the comments....

I must confess to making an error at somewhere along the way, which I hadn't noticed until I checked back.

Jim, thanks for the spot, there was no cloning and for others who have commented there should be more space at the top.

When I checked back at the file, I had created a duplicate layer at somepoint (not sure why), forgot about it, then moved one of the layers slightly before posting :o

    So, here is the image as intended;

    Hi Grant,

    The lower angle really helped.

On the reason of using a shallow DOF. We had already seen this pair mate around 5/6 times before I captured this image, and I found the background quite distracting when stopping down.

It was just on the Chobe cutline with and the pair were quite close to the thickets.

    Very powerful image!

I have no problem cloning out anything I think is a distraction - disclosure is all that is required for me.

I would use the content aware tool and remove the flies (?) around the heads as for me they are a distraction from the main image.
    Cheers, Jay

you sure captured the moment here Russel...these bouts can be intense, especially if you're close :)

I am wondering if a closer crop would improve this, as I'm in 2 minds about the cut-off tails?

    Russell,

Very nice, I would like to have seen a little more room all round, looks pretty sharp to me.

Is that the vehicle you used? Great idea to have no doors at rear, would be very useful if more people had this, but passengers maybe scared:)

I love this one, Rusel. Very powerful image with the facial expressions. Would be nice to have a bit more room there and include the tails. Well done.

I have no issue with cloning, though for me, the flies are Africa. Especially in during suicide month (October)

    Thanks, Ken.

Yep, I have used that vehicle twice now. The only difference is that by September it had been re-sprayed green.

That is Alwyn sitting in the front.
