Still practicing on my local gulls -- this time with my new 500m straight out of the box.

Very beautiful picture, from this I'd say your practising is done :).

Excellent dorsal view, superb eye contact, and perfect exposure and comp imo. Lovely image, Bill.
Is a monopod a good companion for a 500mm? I am considering getting a 500mm and was curious about the monopod option.
Bill, very nice dorsal view and sharpness. Gulls are great to practise with and hone flight photography skills.
Your practice is really paying off Bill! Perfect pose, exposure, and sharpness. I would suggest that you ditch the monopod for flight. Either a tripod or hand held will do better than a monopod when photographing BIF.

Love the full wing and tail spread very much, good exposure, nice composition and excellent eye contact. Congratulation on your new lens :D
Great image Bill - love the pose. Given the subject matter, I am a little confused by the -1.3EV compensation - is that a typo?
Hi Bill , lovely flight pose and detail against a light background. Also like the eye contact and sharp head. Well done with the new lens.
Thanks Sidharth. I've only had the lens and monopod for two weeks, and can't claim much experience yet with either. Already there have been cases when a tripod would have been preferred - in particular the monopod is tough to hold still on a very windy day with a heavy lens, and you can't let go of the monopod when you need two hands for another task like looking through field glasses. On the other hand, it has two-thirds fewer legs to adjust when making quick changes in height, is easy to travel with, and helps support the weight of the heavy lens when standing around waiting for the right shot. The monopod has proven to be a very useful purchase and I'm glad I got it (I'm using the Gitzo GM2541 with RRS replacement lens collar, foot and tilt head); but I'll also need to add a better tripod to my arsenal some time soon.
Thanks Doug. I was practicing with the monopod to see how well I could track birds with it, and had some success so far. It will take me a while to learn how to manage the weight of the lens, but I did try some hand-held BIF over the weekend and managed some sharp shots. I'll keep practicing.
Thanks Jeff. It's not a typo; just a mistake. I was trying primarily to track birds against a dark foliage background (I'll post one in the next few days) and failed to make an adjustment when this one flew up into the light sky. I made a 1-stop adjustment in RAW transfer to get the posted image.
Excellent view here Bill, really nice shot.
Gary.
Nicely done. I need , want, MUST HAVE my 500! Still, practicing with your local fauna is how one gets there.
You nailed this one Bill. Great wing position and head turn.:)
Thank you Gary, David, Jim and Denise for the kind comments.
