one from this morning at the joe overstreet boat landing. it was a treat to watch this guy hunt for the snails and come back to the perch to eat while there were ospreys and eagles flying over head, a flock of skimmers almost at my feet, and a whooping crane in the cow pasture behind me. what a great place!!

nikon d300, sigma 50-500 at 370mm (uuuuggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!), f/6.3, 1/1600s, 0EV, ISO 400, tripod. i cant believe i had another 130mm left and didnt use it:(

and i was sitting here thinking i couldnt do any better than this. so much to learn! thanks for looking and i appreciate your comments.

Excellent, Harold. I took photos of a snail kite on that same post a couple of weeks ago. I like the raised leg.

Nice work Harold! Love that raised leg clasping the snail...just wish we were a little closer. ;) The adult males are a dark gray overall. This bird has the white streaking on the breast and head pattern that are much closer to the juveniles/adult female. Combined with the orange legs and what looks to be a red eye, I'd say this is indeed an adult female. Hope to photograph them myself one day!
