    Default Hunting in the rain

This is the mum of two 11 month old Cheetah boys who's eyes are fixed on a baby Thompsons Gazelle she has just located hiding in the grassland,
moments later all three were feasting on the hapless creature as the rain continued to pelt down.
The light was fading fast in the heavy cloud and rainstorm.

    D3s 500VR + 1.4tc ISO3200 1/125s@f/6.3 beanbag out of window 30% crop. NR on BG

    C & C most welcome

    Cheers

    Marc,

This is good result given the high ISO, great eyes, and no apparent cast:)

Marc--Gorgeous image at any ISO-superb even at 3200, especially given the focal length and the 30% crop. The eyes are just incredible and the burred rain drops take it over the top. Extremely well done. Cheers.

The red in the eyes really stand out and I really like the rain. Really puts it over the top!

Very cool Marc and the rain is over the top.

I would like you to try the following (I did in repost)

    Create BG copy.
In channels Palette, CTRL-Click on the RGB channel to create highlight selection.
IN layers palette on the BG copy, create a mask from the selection - this is a B&W gray scale mask.
On the BG copy, change blending mode to Multiply. You can vary opacity for a different affect but I left it at 100%.

My idea here is the darken the image. No other corrections made.

Certainly Robert your repost has given it more depth, which compared to the OP looks so much stronger. Marc I like the way you have also managed to retain the conditions, wet!!! :) Personally I just find it doesn't quite sit right as a composition and even a portrait crop may not still answer the question.

    Marc,

Roberts repost has added a little extra oomph, which I like.

Not to sure about other comments.

Hi Marc, excellent capture here, shooting in the low light conditions meant you were able to get the colour of the cheetahs eyes, as opposed to them being shadowed as happens so often. The raindrops are an added bonus. I like Roberts repost. Image quality looks very good at 3200. Well done using the long lens and TC at such slow shutter speed, and staying out in the rain
    cheers

Looks like we all enjoyed the rain this year.

This is an excellent example of slow ss , high ISO and the ability to achieve an image with real feeling.

    Well done Marc.

    Cheers

    Hi Marc,

The image rivals some of your painted dog images from awhile back. I'll start with the eyes because I think they are just fantastic and anchor the entire photo. The intense stare goes really well with the story you tell about the setting.....just love it! The rain of course almost always adds to an image and the background is superb at an ISO setting that I have never dreamed of using. Brilliant photograph, my friend. By the way the repost is awesome as well but might have looked similar by just taking the brightness slider down a notch....much easier.....probably not though.

Regarding the composition, I often use 5 x 4 aspect ratio on images like this just to remove a little space from one side or the other. I would consider it for this one to take a little off the right side but not really necessary.

Marc, the thumbnail really didn't do this image justice. Not at all expecting such a wonderful photo when I opened it. I think the repost has given greater depth to the image. Only down side for me is the composition … the horizontal crop doesn't seem to be adding strength to her pose. Is this FF or do you have cropping options?

    Marc,
I like the eye contact and the raindrops. The laid back ears add to the rainy day feel.

Marc, Robert's repost rocks, and for me I love the pose, and composition with all the rainy neg space. Simply beautiful, and ISO 3200!

Good looking cat, you gotta love the D3s:D. Roberts post takes it up a bit as mentioned, I too struggle with the comp - it needs either more or less this is that awkward in between for me. Love the rain and sharpness is great.

Marc - Nice portrait under harsh conditions. I hope you don't mind, I turned it into a vertical crop. You still have the effect of the rain but I think it works better.

Many thanks Robert, I tried it with 80% opacity and found that best.
A great tip for future implementation.

In regards to the comp, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that front.:D
