Default Sunning Pelican in LaJolla, CA

The Pelicans love to sun themselves on the cliffs of La Jolla Cove. They make perfect subjects to practice, because they will sit still for a while.:)
I don't know if the pic will post - I'm having trouble with that part.
This is a great site and I hope to learn a lot from all of you.
    Thanks
    Nancy

No pic yet as you can see Nancy. Want are the specific problems with uploading for you?

Thanks for checking this Dan. When I try to post a new thread I do not see the place where it says to upload my image from Flickr. I thought the directions said that there would be a window saying manage your settings, but I don't see that. I think I'm missing something.
Any suggestions? I looked under additional options.

Here are the guidelines for posting.......You need the Forum Participant section not the one for Members.

    Hope this helps.

The guidelines link that William posted should help. I think you are looking for "manage attachments" when you post. Scroll down below the text window and you should see the button. I am not sure about linking to flickr but the guidelines should cover that also. Good luck.

Not yet Nancy! Maybe some of the mods will see this thread soon and have the answers! I produce derivative files to the specs required here (1024x800, 200kb or less) and save them to a "bpn" folder. Then upload them thru the "manage attachments" utility.

Hurray!! Looks good Nancy! The bird looks great, sharp and well exposed and the BG is smooth. The OOf thing in the lower right is distracting however. I would also prefer the crop not being so tight and close to the birds tail. Keep them coming now!

Yea, Nancy, you did it! It's hard for me to explain what you're doing wrong because I've been a member since day one so I have always uploaded straight from my computer. What was it that you did differently this time that worked? Maybe it will help me explain it to someone else some day.

It's a beautiful pelican image and has many strong points. It does look a bit dark overall - so pulling up the midtones and dark tones a bit should help. You have something in the lower right corner (LRC) that is distracting - I'm guessing it's a closer rock in the foreground (FG) and that's going to be hard to clone out because of its size.

Probably my best suggestion would be to either get lower in angle so the head/eye is looking more at you or waiting for the bird to pop his head up and see what's going on. There's nothing wrong with it as is - you do have his head and eye nicely in focus - but it would be s tronger image if the bird was looking right at you!

Keep at it...you definitely have a lot of positives going on! Be sure to read and critique the other entries here in ETL - the more you see what's right and wrong with the other images the faster you'll learn and the more we'll all grow as photographers.

Thanks Dan. I agree about that oof rock. I was trying to focus on the head, I hadn't really paid enough attention to the foreground. Watching BG and FG is something I am working on.
    Thanks for the great feedback.

Thanks Julie. At first I didn't realize that there was a difference between being logged in as a participant and as a member. I'm glad to be a member of this great site.

I see what you mean about the eye looking at you. I have a different shot, that I think gets that aspect better. I'll post that later. I wish I had gotten lower on this guy. He was content to sit there and I think a lower perspective would have made it much better.

BGs & FGs are definitely something I need to work on. Way too often I get a shot I like but the BG or FG hurts the shot. Thanks for the great feedback.

Very nice image. I like the bit of an angle in the light. The shadows give a bit of depth to the nice pelican.

Also a good idea to include the camera/lens and setting details.

Looking forward to the next one.
