Default Nikon D90 AF Impacted by White Balance Setting?

I have run into an autofocus problem a few times now and I'm wondering if anybody else has seen it.

I am starting to pay more attention to my white balance settings now rather than always just leaving it in auto. What I've seen is that if I have my WB set to sunny, but either clouds have rolled in or I have moved to a shadowed area, most/all of my photo are out of focus. If I switch the WB setting to auto, focusing is instantly sharp again.

    Anybody have an explanation?

Weird! This is the first I heard of this.
Is there a newer firmware version you could try?

I'll have to check. I've had the camera just over a year and haven't updated the firmware at all.
