A favorite of mine, this one came very close to our land rover. C&C encouraged and always appreciated.

I like the look on this bird -- the eye is a real attention getter amongst all the lighter colors and the detail in the neck feather look almost like they are the result of a needlework project -- my first look at this bird - TFS

Really nice work Katie. Love the habitat here. What I am curious about is why the colors look so faded? Is that how it looked? Not a criticism, just need to understand. Hence why I would increase saturation a tad. :) Well done getting this wonderful close-up! :)

    Wow!
What a nice looking bird! My only suggestion would be to increase the color temperature a little. Love the grass/vegetation around the bird.

Good exposure and detail for this portrait. I've not had the chance to see one in person but feel that as Juan has mentioned an increase on color temp might bring it to life a little more. Well done.

Thanks all, and for Akos: we had an overcast sky and...I hestitated posting this image as even though it looks good to me, based on previous feedback of other images, I suspected that it might not show well. This tells me I probably need to recalibrate my monitor.

I do appreciate the feedback and helpful comments.

Hi, Katie. I'll echo the others' positive comments on comp, exposure, sharpness, and BG. I actually like the nearly monochromatic version as presented here but warming things up a bit could be nice too. What WB did you have set at the moment of capture?

    All the best,
    Greg Basco

Hi Greg, I used auto WB and now I'm remembering your advice to use the cloudy setting when in Costa Rica and that probably would have been a good option in the Serengeti as we didn't have many bright days. I think I'll go back and convert again but change the WB setting. Thank you for the feedback!

Hi, Katie. I suspected AWB when I saw the picture. You'll recall that I do indeed find it too cool for most nature images and prefer either cloudy or sunny (or somewhere between 5200 and 6500 K if setting manually). Like you said, you easily can take care of this in RAW conversion. So, no harm done and you'll be able to do whatever you want as you optimize this one.

I just like to set the white balance I think I want in camera so that I get the absolutely most accurate and representative histogram while in the field.

    All the best,
    Greg
