I liked the pose on this one, but I was also wondering if the bg was too distracting. It is a barn roof and I toned it down quite a bit.

I like the background now. It is tack sharp, with a good pose and the exposure is dead on.

Dave, it's an awesome pose and I think you smoothed that BG out nicely. I think you needed more DOF though as his head is sharp but the belly totally loses detail. On top of that, there's a lot of noise in that darker area of his body and it looks like you might have brought the dark tones up quite a bit or it's a substantial crop? Or could it be that when you smoothed out the BG you caught part of his body?

It could be the dof. I just checked the dof and I can't quite remember how far i was. But if 50 ft total dof is 7". If 60 feet it increases quickly to 13". So maybe.

It is a vertical cropped from a horizontal with a bit taken off the top. So not that.

I did run a contrast enhance on the small file so maybe that's what it is.

Anyway thanks Jules. I had looked at this for a few days and kept thinking it was over sharpened. Now i know.

Hi Dave. I think you have an error on DOF calculation. 50 ft/F5.6/ at 720mm is about 4 inches (.3foot). Remember you were using a TC.
If you focused on the head, as it appears you did, that would only leave only 2" in front of it (i.e. the chest area) in proper focus. At 70 feet you only have 3" in front in proper focus.

Based calculations on this Online calculator

Right you are Bill, and thanks for pointing that out to me. Much appreciated.

It sure does not leave much room for dof. Even going to f8 does not add much.
