Really smooth, soft looking plumage but nice sharp details, Tim. BG complements the perch well to give an impression of the habitat. I might slightly darken the brighter area in the BG just above the tasseled end of the perch. Yellow ring matches the beak and eye!

    Tim:

This is a very lovely bird, with exquisite markings.
    Good points by Tony.
I really like the composition, the bird balanced by the mass at the end of the perch.

Glad you got the opportunity, you did it justice.

    Cheers

    Hi Tim,

I think this is an outstanding photograph that I would be proud to display on my office or dining room wall. I've never seen a bearded reedling but I am duly impressed with this one....just a sweeeet-looking bird. Your composition is wonderful, by the way and the seed head is a real winner here. I even agree with your name positioning.:) Hey, the little guy has a band on his leg....just noticed that.....awesome.

P.S. This shot is a real testament to Sigma lenses.

Awesome little guy, and what a beautiful perch! Difficult comp, but I think you pulled it off:cool: Is the plumage really that smooth, or did you run NR on the entire image? I'm questioning the HA though. I don't mind it looking the opposite way as the image is well balanced, but for me HA angles around the 45 degree mark with birds are difficult to pull-off as I am always bugged by the shy "peek-a-boo" far eye. More of a profile, or a straight on look would have been better. Just personal taste really.

Having said this I do like the image...well done!

Super sweet image, unusual composition that works really well for me. Love the perky pose of the bird. I note that he is banded, are they rare?

    Hi Grace,
Yes they are rare in the UK, they have a specialised habitat (reed beds) which there aren't a lot of here. They have a dual fuel, in the summer they eat insects and the winter they eat the seeds from the reeds, it's at this time they are most seen as they collect grit from paths to help digest the seeds.

Congratulations on getting this long-awaited shot! With Daniel, I'm too wondering why the bird looks so ethereal.

The ethereal quality hopefully comes from their very fine plumage, I did run noise reduction but selectively removed it from the bird and reed.

Awesome, thanks for the explanation! Our Waxwings have very smooth plumage too and often have the same effect as your Reedling.

Absolutely gorgeous image. I love the soft, painterly feel of it. The colors of the background and composition are very nice!

Hi Tim, this front on shows the 'beard' nicely. ( like an old chinese warrior ) I like the way you have framed this, and just love that BG. Congrats on getting your first.
