Any suggestions for destinations for photography. Basically a destination that would allow me to fly to it and enjoy a nice 3-4 day weekend photographing, generally a 3 day holiday weekend possibly with an extra day off. I prefer to fly and dislike long drives (anything over 100 miles). Ideally it should involve:
1. Proximity to a major airport, allowing one to fly in and reach the desitnation quickly.
2. Spectacular and somewhat unique scenery or nature photography opportunities.
3. Ease of getting there. The overall ease of flying in, renting a car, staying close to my destination and then flying out. The idea being that the whole trip does not turn into a tiring logistical nightmare.
Reasonable options I can think of are for nature and bird photography is Miami with access to the Tamiami trail/Everglades region and Fort Myers for Sanibel and Ding Darling area; and for landscapes Yosemite (using Fresno as the airport) and Rocky Mountain National Park (using Denver). I live in the Northeast US and would ideally prefer destinations that don't turn into a hassle flying to them but am generally flexible.
If you do Bosque del Apache, be sure to build in some time to go up to Sandia Crest near Albuquerque for Rosy-Finches. I believe that all 3 (4 if you believe Hepburn's should be considered its own species) show up pretty much annually, with Black Rosy-Finch being the most common. The site layout is a bit rough, but this site about the Sandia Rosy-Finches has good info about the flock.
To see what kind of photo opportunities exist there, just do a Google image search of "sandia rosy-finch".
Deep south Texas. Fly to Brownsville and have several destinations within an hours drive. Not much scenery except for blooming yucca at Laguna Atascosa in Feb. and some years have good wildflowers in March. Lots of bird photography possibilities along with alligators, coyotes, javelina, rattlesnake, jackrabbit and bobcat if you're lucky.
Anchorage in winter is beautiful (no mosquitos, either :p). The first Saturday in March is the start of the Iditarod sled race -- an event unto itself -- and the short drive down the Kenai peninsula offers spectacular scenery. You should see bald eagles, moose, ducks, and sea otters. During my business travel days this was always among my favorite destinations. That time if year temps range from the 20s to the upper 30s.
Valley of Fire, located 1 1/2 hours North of Las Vegas It is a State Park that was not real crowded. I was just there two weeks ago. Very little wild life but beautiful red rocks!!
