I made this image from inside my house, at the bay window towards the cloudy ovc western exposure with my new Cannon EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS. I was surprised by the sharpness given the slow shutter speed.

    Cannon 30D
    EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 (FL=170mm), 1/20th sec @ f/5.0 EV -.75, iso 400

added a bit more light in LR, added a little vibrance & saturation, cropped about 50% to improve composition, opended in PS, sharpened the eye, sized for the web, and sharpened.

    comments greatly appreciated :)

    Cheers, Bruce Gove

hi bruce, wonder what this would look like vertical? i think it would be a stronger compo as there is a lot of blank canvas to the right of the bird. there seems to be a lot of noise in the bg also.

that's a great technique you have for shooting out the window!! i would not have known had not you said anything.

    Bruce,

You really pulled some super detail in the blacks and feathers in general, nice sharp image!!! The BG color is lovely and goes well with the bird

Ditto what Harold said on the rest

    Hey Bruce,
Very fine little guy. I like the colors in the background and the bird itself. For my taste, I would shoot it vertical.. What do you think?

Another vote for the vertical and more room at the top Would crop most of the right which will get the bird larger in frame

you did get some terrific detail in that bird along with fine processing btw you have en excellent copy of that lens ... hang on !!!

vertical crop looks super Bruce, did you go back to "original" uncropped file for the new crop?
I ask, as it it is considerably softer than first post....may need a little USM

I went back to the original, but I didn't spend as much time with it..

    Thanks for everyone's time!
