These two little ones were having a great time playing with each other and it was fun to watch them. It was near the end of the day with dull light; taken from a land rover in the Serengeti and I'd really like to know if the composition works? (cropped from horizontal and I have more room all around) is it over-sharpened? and any other advice for improving the image. Thank you in advance!

Katie - I like the colors and you've brought out nice detail. I think I would take a little from the bottom and add a little to the rhs if it were mine. Nice playful issue.

Katie, this is a priceless pose with the two elephant calves, well captured. I agree with Rachel regarding the composition, not sure that I wouldn't rather go to the original horizontal, get rid of a bit more of the oof grass, give a bit more to the rhs and increase the lhs to give the horizontal. Keeping the calves in the rhs of the frame should still give a good, strong comp. Either that or if you want to stay with the vertical I would still crop from the bottom, add to the rhs, crop a little from the lhs to balance.

Either way, you have a winner here.

What a sighting Katie. I probably get to see more elephants than you when out in our National parks, and have never witnessed a cuteness factor like this. Comp wise, add a little to the RHS, take a tad off the bottom, and add a little more to the right, as Hilary mentioned to form a horizontal comp. I feel there is a slight magenta cast to this.

Now this is definitely a wonderful sighting, young ellies are always such good fun to watch.

I agrre with the suggestion of adding a little to the RHS, and also see a light magenta cast.

priceless moment here Katie! love the interaction. for my tastes the grass around them might just be too sharp (contending with ellie detail IMHO). I would selectively sharpen only the elephants when preparing this one for posting.

I can also see this one working well in B&W - bump the exposure on the surroundings a bit to get it brighter and make up the majority of "whites" in the image, then convert to B&W.

Composition is fine for me here, I like the idea of going vertical rather than horizontal

Certainly a welcome treat this image Katie and away from the standard elephant shots.

Adding a fraction more to the rhs won't hurt, especially if you have the room Katie. Regarding sharpness it might be a fraction, however the fact that you were working with ISO1000 might also compound things. Yes there is a redness within the image (a Canon issue) very easily rectified, but the conversion to B/W would be your best option I feel in may ways and perhaps 'make' the image.

    Katie,

    Good comments above.

I too see the magenta (I believe) color cast. I like the vertical crop but some more on the RHS would be good.

    Cute beyond words. Well done.

Thank you all so much for the helpful comments as I really want to make the best of this image; it is one of my favorites from the trip. I am becoming more and more interested in black and white so I will work on that suggestion as well as the composition. The magenta was even more pronounced before I pulled it back; not enough I guess.

    Thanks, everyone!

Here's my quick try at trying a black and white version...is it too contrasty? (took some off the bottom, no other changes to composition at this time, otherwise tried to follow Morkel's suggested workflow).

Take your point, it might be too contrasty Katie, but...

Would try to see if there is any more detail in the heavy shadows, however not sure why you cropped some from the foot of the image, looked good before?

A great moment well captured Katie, would take the red cast out from the Ele's and warm up the surrounding grasses.
