During my recent trip to the Kruger National Park, I managed some close ups of this Hornbill.

This looks like a studio portrait! seriously!

Probably the best image of a hornbill that I have seen so far at BPN, what am I saying? anywhere!
Lover everything about this image, I am not a big fan of cropping but I believe the image would benefit from a small crop on top. That 100-400 lens rocks!

    Stuart,

    How close were you?

I agree entirely with the Juan's comments, truly amazing.

Thanks a stack Juan and Ken.

Juan, with regards to a studio shot- deep in the African bush;). The BG is OOF sand.

The reason why I took a portrait shot was that he was sitting on low fence, so the 'perch' wasnt ideal. He was probably 4-5m away. We were at a picnic spot, a designated area to stop off whilst driving through the park - thus the fence.

Stuart that is one heck of a good shot, I am going to the Gambia shortly and hope to get some hornbill shots myself. If I get any as good as this I will be delighted.

    Stuart:

Great colors/textures and details. What a bill.

I might consider a version with just the most subtle lightening of the eye and surrounding face.

    Fine work!

    Cheers

    Randy

Fantastic image Stuart. Love the details on the bill, very neat. I like Randy's suggestion...

Is this a species that looks for food handouts?

Fabulous image bro. A little fill flash would have perhaps enhanced an already wonderful image IMHO. An awesome looking bird indeed.
