Default Grizzly COY (cub of the year)

    Attached Images Attached Images

    Tripod mounted Mark IV, ISO 100, f5.6, 1/640, 700mm, +.33 ev.
I forgot to change the ISO from shooting early AM landscapes in YNP.
This image was taken mid morning in the Hayden Valley, YNP. It is sharpened, adjusted in curves, & the yellows are desaturated. It is nearly FF. She is a beautiful grizzly. I think of her as a she because of her unusual & lovely color.

Andrew - I like how she almost blends into the environment. Big round face and nice pose. The light fur on top of the head looks a little hot to me.

Hi Andrew, seems you are moving in the right direction, although I haven't in all honesty seen much of you recent postings, sorry.

You have the detail and a slight catchlight which is good and managed not to lose the face in shadow, congrats. Her coat looks like you can almost sink your hands & arms into it, but not advisable, LOL. You got away with the ISO, but I think from memory it's one of your points you need to remember, could always pre-set slightly higher, then it could work both ways. My suggestion would be that you could crop in slightly tighter? Am away, so cannot comment on cast, but I think it looks OK.

I really like the bear in the environment, she is so well camouflaged and yet is easily seen. I love the alert look on her face and the all the tonings. Bad luck on the ISO settings … you have my disease!! I'm always doing things like that. I think I'll have a recording of Steve K on my iphone and have it going "check your settings, check your settings", a bit like one of those airline warnings when you're about to hit the ground. :D

I am not at all familiar with the colours of Bears, this is not what I would have expected and IMHO an interesting subject.

If at all possible I would have liked to have a little more detail in the face, I am a little surprised at your use of such a remarkably low ISO.

    I appreciate everyone's suggestions. Thanks.
Steve, Hilary, Ken; You're right. I need to pay more attention to my camera settings. I still get excited when I see grizzlies that are close enough to get images that I just start shooting. They are magnificent animals.
Ken, bears come in many colors—from cinnamon to black & every color in between. The guard hairs on their humps are frequently silver in color. Hence the name silver tip grizzly. This cub may darken with age. I hope she keeps her color because she is very photogenic. It would be cool photographing her as an adult with these colors.

Interesting colours on her coat Andrew, and nicely camouflauged in the surrounding foliage. Good eye contact too.
