In the category of "other passions", I am also very much involved in kite flying. I specialize in stunt kites, but there are many types of kites and styles of flying. Over the years I have become the "official" photographer for several of the kite festivals in the area that are sanctioned by the American Kitefliers Association. This is from the recent Japan-America Association sponsored festival in Seal Beach, California. This is a wonderful event, featuring many exhibition fliers and demonstrations, traditional Japanese drums and martial arts, and thousands of people having fun on the beach with their kites.
This shot is a look at the "giant kite exhibition field", where the big boys are demonstrated. To give you a sense of scale, the koi fish in the bottom of the frame are 60 feet long. These kites are called "inflatables", as they take air from the opening in the front and fly low to the ground. The red, white, and blue "sled" on the right is over 100 feet long.
If there is interest I have lots of images from this and other festivals that I can share.
