    Default African Wattled Lapwing

Whilst out shooting bee eaters two weekends ago, I happenned to wander into this guys territory. There were chicks around, as we had seen them earlier. Their behaviour is to fly into the air, make a huge racket, and 'dive bomb' any intruders to hopefully ward them away from the chicks. I captured this angle, as he was turning around to dive bomb me. Taken late afternoon.

You don't often see flight shots of these birds. Eye contact is a great bonus, he really looks angry. Well exposed on those whites.

Killer bank shot, upper wing detail, perfect EXP, perfect head angle. Tail and feet perfect. Was this a vertical ORIG?

I really love this image. The light, pose and details all look great.
I went out 2 days ago to try for this exact same pose on our Masked Lapwings, but the birds were so tame that whenever some walked past the birds just stood off to oneside instead of flying away like they should've!! In the end I had to settle for a portait image. :o

Thanks a stack Artie. there is no way I could capture this guy vertically. they fly erratically and fairly quick. Maybe a challenge for next time.;)

Great shot Stuart. Nice dorsal view of the wing pattern and a sweet profile of the face.

Stuart, You can do it. If you find yourself in a situation where the banking birds are too large (wingtip to wingtip) in the horizontal frame then simply turn the camera on its end and go for it. It takes a bit of practice but you can do it and even if you can't its worth a try in that situation because you cannot fit the bird in the frame anyway....

Stuart, this is one heck of a shot....banking pose with the right head position is hard.
