Default Lapland Longspur - a first for me!

This little fella has been delighting local birders and photographers with its non-chalant and very tolerant ways. I've observed this species from way afar in wintery farmers' fields before, but this is my first real good view (and photographs) of this awesome tundra breeder.

    Canon 40D + 100-400L @375mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/200s., f/7.1, ISO 400, +1.7 EC, natural light, handheld, FF.

Very nice capture, great details and light. The only thing I am not so happy with is the ruffled plumage of the breast (alters the elegant shape of the species) ... wind?

Thanks Mital. In our parts birds are not always this cooperative either. Good fieldcraft, or other tools such as audio or feeders are needed most of the time. This guy, however, was such a poser and happy to strut for local photographers.

I Love the puffed up breast on this one. Is this in the Ottawa area?

Beautiful shot Daniel. We get a lot of Lapland Longspurs migrate through northwestern Ontario, but like you, I usually observe them sitting out in a farm field or along a gravel logging road - you are fortunate to get such a clean setting for your shot. I personally like the ruffled breast feathers - with the cool tones of the image, I am imagining the bird surveying the horizon on a cold, windy day...

Dan, I see you've met our 3 guests, its amazing how close this bird let me get, sometimes even walking towards the lens. As always spot on exposure, sharp and well composed. TFS

Dan, excellent detail, and you certainly nailed the sharpness on the little guy. I like the hint of clouds in the BG.

Perfectly exposed image with beautifull colour and defenition. I too like the ruffled chest feathers gives the image a lot of life and character.

Hey Doug, thanks! Yes, this is indeed in the Ottawa area - just east of town (in Orleans if you are familiar with the area)

I sure did. I actually met Mr. Lark a couple of weeks ago now and glad he's stuck around. We both missed a 4th guest there though...a Wheatear(!!!!). I actually went back today and slapped on the kenko tubes for full-frame head portraits:cool:. Fingers still frozen!

Amazing shot Dan! Great sharpness, Ha and exp! I can't believe you can get that close! We have a few now in NorCal but you even think about moving in on them and they fly around for 20 minutes!

When I used to see these in Great Kills Park in Staten Island, New York a zillion years ago you could not get within a mile of them. You have created a very special image of a special bird.

    Daniel:

Well done technically, artistically and fieldcraft wise.

This is about as new perfect for a bird image that you could ever hope to capture. The soft blue tones of the BG are in harmony with the whites and browns of the bird. The soft earth tones of the (it looks like) rock perch too are in harmony with the BG and bird.

The pose (head angle, etc.) just right and great detail in the plumage. The tall just above the rock and not obstructed. A wonderful image Daniel.
