    Default 1DMKIII or 7D

A friend of mine is about to buy a new body. He shoots birds, wildlife, macro and family pictures. He is thinking about buying a 1DMKIII or a 7D. More expensive bodies are out of the question. I own both bodies, but I would like to know what you guys would recommend choosing. Thanks everyone for the reply.

Another vote for the 7D... it delivers superb images and is remarkably versatile...

Owning both, I will chose the 7D over the Mark III unless I need the higher ISO settings and better noise control of the Mark III. But all in all, I would go the 7D.

I just went through the same decision a few months ago....I bought a used 1D MKIII from Adorama.

I decided I wanted the 1D MKIII body for: the built in vertical controls, improved weather sealing, dual cards, more exposure bracketing options for HDR, will auto focus with stacked converters, less noise at higher ISO, faster frame rate, it complimented the 40D I already own.

Those were the main reasons I went with the 1D MKIII and I'm happy so far....no problems but I have not ever used a 7D so my story is one sided.

Question for you 7D users out there. How is the high ISO noise performance-can you shoot at ISO 2400-3200 and get usable images?? Or do you have to go to the 1D series as Robert alluded to? I don't shoot Canon so I'm curious to see how the 7D performs at high ISO settings.

Hi Lorant, I own both, and I only use the 7D if I really need the extra distance and the extra megapixels for cropping, like with small birds. It works nicely in good light and I try not to go over 800iso with it. The Mk3 has much better hi-iso performance (up to iso 2000 is okay for me) and it has better AF, especially with fast moving subjects. I bought the 1Dmk3 used after being somewhat disappointed with the 7D low-light performance. I know there are many people making great images with both cameras, I just find that the mk3 makes it much easier for me to get cleaner, sharper images.
    Those are my thoughts.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. My friend ended up buying the 1DMKIII. As I said I own both bodies and I am on the same page with Grant. Love the 1DMKIII and use the 7D when I need the extra reach or I want to save on weight, but not too happy with the high ISO performance.

    Cheers.

    Lorant
