Default Sandhill Crane Chick Making an Appearance

This 2-day old SHC chick popped out of it's mother's tail feathers as I waited for some action. It came a little late as you can see from the placement of the catchlight, but better late than never. This is not the same nest from my last post. This nest was more difficult to photograph due to obstructions and angle. Removed one piece of nuisance nesting material.

Beautiful little critter. I like the pose and color of the chick with the feather bg. Perhaps I would take a tiny bit off the top, slightly below the dark gray spot.

A really cute shot, the detail is excellent and the aperture optimal, I think Allan's suggestion is a good one, ( I have just masked off the area he suggests.)

I agree with the above suggestions. The f/8 aperture was just right. It gave you beautiful sharpness of the chick while slightly softening the background feathers, thereby causing the little guy to pop. Beautiful color. Nice catchlight and nice control of the tonal gradations.

    Hey Marina,
Sweeeeeeet light! Pose is super too and the feathers make a great BG too! I'm more partial to the OP.....as the shadow comes into play more......perhaps just a little crop.....leaving entire feather and v of the shadow. Just an personal option as the OP is fantastic!!!

Great light and I like the feathers of the adult behind the chick.

Hi Marina, I refer your OP, as there is more space. Lovely sharp detail, and just love the colours, and how the the chick stands out against the feathers of mom.

Big time cuteness factor and I love the head crest of this fuzzball.

Sharpness and light look great and I do like the tighter crop on the re-post.

Charming. I don't agree with the repost though - I feel the original crop conveys better the small size of the chick compared to its mother.
Beautiful expression and great detail on the feathers, and you've got to love those chubby legs.
