    Default Lion Profile

This male lion walked past my vehicle and i had followed them for a while shooting a variety of images. I cropped off the RHS to create this. Canon 1D MK 3 , 500 mm F4 L lens at F4.5 , 1/250th sec @ ISO 400 on a bean nag with badger gear panning plate.

A very nice profile Andrew with a good detail & great complimentary BG.

My only thought and this is across the images, they look a 'fraction' too sharp, for me I might prefer slightly less, again this is just a personal POV, plus I might also just tone the saturation down a bit on the eye. However, I am sure at full size it is perfect. Not a lover of square crops, but this works well.

Great profile. Like the catch light in the eye and the complimentary colors in the background.

Unlike Steve, I really like square crops, perhaps a throw back to the old 6x6 format. :D

The background and the quality of the eye detail really stand out here. I personally would like a tiny bit more shoulder to anchor his neck and mane but the overall detail and composition work for me. I wonder if an image like this would be a candidate for some of the duo tone treatment Steve was talking about in his bison thread? Just the detail of the hair and the facial expression might work well (not saying better, just may be interesting).

I like the colors of the lion and the BG, very complimentary.

    Andrew,

I like the square crop and I think the sharpness looks OK. What I would have like to seen is your image taken more in front of the lion then behind. I am good with the profile but here he is looking past your vantage point.

    Great BG as well.

I like the square crop for a little something different here and I also like the excellent detail and open mouth. I too would have prefered this if taken a tad sooner becauwse it appears the lion has passed you.

Sharpness looks fine from here and the animal has lots of character. Robert stole my critique; you need to be a bit more to your left and ahead of the lion a bit....

Remarkably fine detail especially the eye, sharpness is OK by me, as are the colours and their levels.

I think I would prefer a little more "walk into" space.

thanks you for some great commentary. Unfortunately with these animal things they seldom co-operate :) I like the suggestion of more space on the LHS very much ! Hillary, i have processed this one in duo tone and it has potential !

Andrew, Assuming that you were in a vehicle, who was driving?
