Rachel's wolf reminded me of a wolf image that I recently processed. Captive tundra or arctic wolf photographed at the Lakota Wolf Preserve in New Jersey. Great location in mid-winter when their coats are thick. You shoot thru openings in the fence, as with the Wolf Conservation Center. Arrange to go mid-week if possible to avoid crowd (and by crowd I mean max of about 8 shooters vying for fence openings).

I left a few drops of water on (our) left side of snout and there are a few eyelashes in front of right side eye. Wish I could have gotten lower to get more of its right eye (our left) but the fence opening would not allow--your thoughts? All c/c welcome.

This is a fabulous picture. I love the composition you chose and the 2-tone BG is very pleasing. Details are very nice, and I love the fact that he is licking his chops. ;) Would that be directed at the photographer?

A nice head portrait of a regal animal in less than regal circumstances. Is the lower half of the frame snow?

Thanks, Marina. The wolf had just finished chewing on a bone and was cleaning up. Some of the gray wolves there will jump up at the photographers shooting thru the openings. I had a close encounter with one--they are amazingly quick!

Thanks Gary. You did a good job of toning down the snow.

    Gary,

Well composed portrait of this great looking animal. As Artie mentioned, good work minimizing the bright BG snow.

Thanks for all of your kind comments. At first I didn't know what to make of the "moussed fur" look on this wolf (on his forehead) but after looking at this image and some others more closely I realized that this is just his or her natural pattern and coloring. Then it started to grow on me (actually I wouldn't mind a little more fur growing on my forehead--lol).
