Default NANPA 2011 SHOWCASE SELECTION - Beak to Beak

    Attached Images Attached Images

Much to my delight, 5 of my photographs (2 in Tier II, 3 in Tier III) have been chosen for NANPA 2011 Showcase Placement. Here is one of those chosen.

A big thanks to Ursula for the opportunity to photograph this Sandhill Crane family when the chick was only one and two days old. This was the type of interaction/intimacy I was hoping and waiting for. There was only one quick window of opportunity, and I was lucky to have been in the right place at the right time.

    Canon 5D, Canon 400DO & 1.4 TC @ 560mm
    F5.6, 1/250sec, ISO 400, manual mode
Canon 580EXII Flash, handheld down on my elbows

Thanks in advance for any C & C,

    Marina

Huge congrats Marina, and there's no doubt why this was chosen. Just love the interaction, and this shows how fragile the young are at the start of their early life. Very well captured.

    Marina:

Touching photo, nice flash control, exposure.
I know you were light limited, but a smidge more DOF, possible by increasing the ISO, might have been an interesting option. The chick doesn't look quite as sharp as the adult, and it would be nice for the lower bulk of the adult to be a bit sharper.

Having mentioned that, it is a very lovely image as is. :)

    Cheers

    Randy

Well done ma'am, sure can feel the love in the shot.

Agree with Randy on the DOF, just a smidgen though.

Wow that's a peach of a shot, could you tell me please how much flash did you use - was it negative or auto, and was the metering evaluative?

Mazel tov. Obviously high on the cuteness scale. As posted there is a green cast. My crop addressed Randy's concerns about the adult's body. I actually worked on the color twice first losing the cast and then warming it up. As good as this is a bit more head turn towards you would have made it even stronger. Still a wonderful image.

Sorry, Artie, but to my eye your repost is not an improvement on the original image. The colors in the original are rich and vibrant (check out the colors on the mama bird's neck; the red eye patch; and the iris). On your repost, these features look washed out. Perhaps it's simply a brightness issue, but the original looks much better to me.

I agree that I went too light late last night. Here is a darker color-corrected version.

Thank you, John. Flash was on ETTL and I would guess somewhere between -2 or -3. It was early morning and the sun was hiding behind the trees, so the cranes needed some fill.

Thanks for the repost, Artie, and for your positive comments. Ironic that right after I posted it, I realized for the first time that there was a green cast but couldn't fix it from work. Your last repost works really well and I"ll be sure to color correct before sending TIFF to NANPA.

Hi Marina. I'm a bit late to the party, but this is an outstanding image! The interaction has a lot of appeal - something that happens for just a moment in time - and you captured it perfectly. I like Artie's 2nd repost with the color correction. :)

Very tender image that transcends the typical static bird photo. Congratulations on your recognition. I know how hard you have worked and the passion you bring to the field. Also am honored that I was able to play a role in putting you in the position to capture one of your other selected entries ;).

    Marina,
That's a beautiful photograph. It's most deserving of the recognition it received. I think Artie's repost of his repost was an improvement and I see that you recognized the original had a cast. As reposted, this is a spectacular photograph of a special moment.
