I had to share this one because it was my first closeup of a yellow-bellied sapsucker and with the leaf over it's head it's not a great composition so I hope it fits the theme. PB oil paint then Topaz Adjust, lots of color and contrast adjustments, layer masks, painting over bright bkg elements, and still wasn't happy with it so I use Topaz Simplify and liked what I got.

Thanks Paul and Denise. I'm not sure I can remove the leaf but I'll try. I can probably remove the lower twig.

Judy thats the nice thing about digital, you never work on the original, just a copy. Try removing the leaf from the head, if you make a mistake...make another copy and try again...thats how I learned...practice makes perfect........god how I just reminded myself of my father...

Gus, my goodness! An amazing transformation. Judy, I really like the colors and your choice of filters. I like the effect on the crape myrtle leaves.:)

A winner here! Beautiful composition, Judy. Gus certainly has transformed it removing the leaf and giving that catchlight. Beautiful colors.

Wow, Gus, great job! I've been so busy I haven't had time to work on it. Maybe tonight... Thanks to Indranil and Cheryl also.

Wow, what a great thread. First off I was fine with the image with the leaf over the bird's head; too cool. I would have suggested lightening the face and upper breast a bit to bring more attention to the bird's face. Gus' repost is greatly appreciated and he did well on the edges but the repeating pattern above the bird is a give-away. Judy, for someone who did not think that they could do it your repost KILLS!

Now I almost forgot to mention that I love, love, love the effect, both on the bird and on the two main branches. And the colors rock. All in all it looks like a wonderful painting. The colors are great.

Wow, thanks Artie! It wasn't easy but not as hard as I thought either. :D I'm glad I was encouraged to try it by seeing what Gus did.

Christopher and Denise, thanks for your comments too!

Judy, great job on the repost and thanks to Gus for showing the way... I think you have shown very well how much can be accomplished by stepping outside of our comfort zone and just going for it! I love the effect you got with PB. Lovely colors and inquisitive pose.
