All for the sake of art (or is it Artie? :D)...

"Have the light and the wind at your back". Well, I failed both of those. Used fill flash with a beamer.

I used Nik "bleach bypass" on this then added some color back in. No sharpening at all (third rule?) because I knew the jpeg conversion would make a mess of the breeding plumage which is blowing in the wind, which is coming from the opposite direction of the sunset light. Kind of different, but hey..

PS - the full resolution tiff of this doesn't have the jaggies.

Kerry, I love the blowing plumage and the lighting. I also like the way you composed this. This is one of my favs of yours! Kerry, could you give everyone some ideas as to how you exposed for this one compared to a regular front lit image. I think this would make a good in-camera workflow link.:)

Broken rules or not, I like this a lot. I would also love to read the exposure technique you used Kerry, I have a beamer and don't use it near as much as I should (shame on me :o)

Wow..Kerry lovely results, there is still a lot of detail on the shady side of the Egret...for me though I'd probably remove the flash highlight in the eye (you viewing the unlit side of the bird)...but just me..TFS

Thanks everyone, I should have included the techs - 7D 400mm f/5.6@f/5.6 1/1600 - 580EX-II EV0 ETTL evaluative. The exposure philosophy here is my standard chiaroscuro thinking, which is to expose for the highlights and let the rest be under-exposed. The only difference of course is the fill flash to bring out some feather detail. The technique is discussed in the mini-tutorial I did, which is linked to the workflow sticky - http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...-mini-tutorial . This is one where your meter wouldn't help much. I have shots hundreds of white birds at ISO 400 and use manual mode, and I know what the ss is going to be at f/5.6 in bright sun. As the light starts to fade in the evening I just adjust for it as I go while keeping an eye on the histogram. Of course this only works for this particular situation and I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't meter a scene.

Paul, I forgot to mention that the eye catch-light is artificial. With the flash on the camera I got "steel eye" which I took out with the burn tool. The eye looked wrong to me just being black so I added a white highlight with the brush tool. When I get home tonight I will post a version without it so we can compare. I just love the snowies...

Very nice, Kerry. I love the back lighting and blowing plumage. Great pose. I'm wondering how it would look with the light band across the top darkened to match the rest of the BG. Just a thought.

    Hi Kerry,

I like this one a lot. The wind blown plumage adds a touch of the elements I think.

For Paul, without the eye flash.

As I've mentioned before, I like backlit subjects so IMO, this looks great! I prefer the version without the added catchlight in the eye.

Love the backlight....feather detail is great! The beak is getting lost in the bg on my monitor but still very nice!
