Ray,
I have been watching this thread but seems no one has done this. I used to use linear conversion in Breezebrowser Pro for highlight recovery, but with ACR, the recovery slider made that obsolete.
You'll have to save it in DNG format. Click the Save Image button, select .dng for file extension. In the compatibility drop down list, select custom and there's a linear option in the window that pops up.

I have a high sarcasm rate. Deal with it.

Chris,
I didn't know that. I use DCRAW. It is free and you can get the source code too. I'm skeptical that commercial software will continue to exist to convert older camera raw files, so I archive copies of DCRAW source code every few months.

I wonder about the long term survivability of the software and hardware. How long before IDE or SATA is no longer a recognized format? If you came across a MFM or RLL hard drive, it would be quite a project to retrieve the contents.

The reason Iasked the question: a short time ago someone suggested doing a linear conversion in a process to recover details
Ray,
You can achieve that goal by going to the curves section of ACR and pulling the curve down. Make the steepest section on the right side of the graph. It really doesn't matter if it is linear or not (relative to the sensor data), you just want to have enough effect to recover the details.

thanks roger.
I have another question for you about LAB, mask, and sharpening but I will post it in digital workflow so others can see you answer.
