Everything is sweet about this image, the light, the COMP, and the bird. It is a Hooded Merg but it might be a young one of either sex as the adult females have golden crests. Could be some sort of adult in eclipse also--I am not familiar with those plumages.

The dark eye would be a good fieldmark to call this one a juvenile bird (Hooded Merganser). Mud Lake is a popular hangout for these guys in the fall too - but they just won't let anybody get too close!!:) I like your comp, Jeff!
