I created this image of a Trumpeter Swan in -camera. I used the blasting highlights and back light to help add some interest. I liked the way the light shined through the wings. Lots of rules broken here. Does it still work?

Hi denise...even though I would like to see the bird's face more and the composition is a bit tight....I still like the image alot. I am just crazy for backlight!
BTW...Is it possible to get the Pleasing Blurs on CD as downloads often fail with my connection?
It works for me Denise. I like the translucent quality of the wings that almost shows the swan's bone structure. I do find the light circles in the BG a bit distracting.
Andrew
Bob, Thanks for the kind comments. It is too tight and the bird is looking away-but I do like backlit images and I am a sucker for swans.
I believe it is only available as a PDF download right now. However if you download "FOX it Reader" it's free (the link is sent with the file) you should have no problems. It really made a difference for me when I downloaded it on my laptop.:)
Andrew, The specular highlights are distracting???:D:D I was going to eliminate the entire string in the BG but thought I'd wait to hear from you guys.
I've had this idea running around my head for a new theme...The moderators select one image or 3 images to pick from, right out of the camera.
The theme is to get it ready for posting, whichever way we think is best
or a variation of this idea
Best job wins.......
This will get us all practising with our respective softwares.
Listing everything you did to the image.
Any image I take that has possibilities, I never trash until I've tried to make it shine...Denise's image of the Swan has possibilities. Through my eyes, this makes it shine....

Denise, I was going to mention the string which intersects the body - I'd like it much better without. But I like it anyway, esp the backlighting on the wings.:)

Hi Denise,
Tight or not, I like this image. Nice wing positions too. I shoot lots of these guys during the winter months along Lake Ontario shoreline in Toronto. The only thing I would change/remove would be the three small bright dots (backlit bugs maybe) along the top of the image.
Wow, Paul, where did that head come from?:)

Paul, You did a fantastic job w/ the head! I also love your idea and think it will make a great theme. I'm sure Kerry and Indranil will agree. I appreciate all the feedback from everyone. :)
I love the image other than the specular highlights string. I'm an oddball but I like tight crops, I do it all the time but trying to loosen up. :D I got a kick out of Paul's head!
I think it works very nicely, Denise. I love the backlighing and the pose. I don't mind the tight crop or the head turned away. Only thing I would change would be to remove the string of specular highlights in the BG.
Judy and Christopher, Thank you both-I agree the string has to go.:)
Oh my, you guys are getting out of control! Denise, I really like the basic image but I would have expunged those bright highlights above the left wing, as Paul did. I really like the specular highlights in the lower part. I'm just not sure about the head transplant... :o It looks a bit unnatural to me but I gotta tip my hat to you Paul - that is darned cool! :D

I love it, Denise! The backlit and the specular highlights on the water makes this image for me.
Paul did a nice head transplant; I like how the lighting matched!

Hi Artie,
I masked the wing only, no water, Copied, Added canvas on right, so both sides behind the wing are different, pasted in wing, then adjusted skew, angle, size.
I assumed the swan you took out west was a Trumpeter..so I looked in my files and found a head taken under similar conditions. You only get these birds in good light, when lucky,
I have over 2 terrabytes of images to choose from........;)...thats a whole lot to pick from. Head added the same way and using a soft brush touched-up, highlights on the neck..
Once before a moderator who shall remain nameless, pm'd me the same question..thinking I'd gone online and found an image of the head and used it...
I tell everyone in OOTB, who reads this "I use only my images"....:D
Thanks for asking Artie

Thanks Paul. Well done. I was worried that you had and used the new Head Angle Skewing Tool that is rumored for PhotoShop 27; that would put the Head Angle Police out of business. :)
