Hi, my first post of an image - hope I haven't stuffed anything up.

    Nikon D300
    500 mm f/4 + TC1.7
    ISO 400
    1/500
    Exposure bias 2/3
Cloned out some stuff in the water, lightened and sharpened the bird and darkened the background especially the rock.

C&C very welcome - I am here to learn :o

Welcome Svante! Love the bird! The image seems to need some CCW rotation. I like the sharpness, low angle and the angle of the bird toward the viewer. The black rock is not good but, it is what it is. Do you have a similar shot without the monolith!

Don't mind that at all, although the rock didn't really bother me. Looks great now and the sharpening improved it!

Great job Gus! I still think this needs a little CCW rotation but the repost is nice.

Beautiful bird! I'd lose the rock - it's so dark it's really competing with the bird for my attention. If there were detail to the rock and a much lighter color then I'd probably say leave it in.

Lovely water, very nice head angle (HA) and good clarity to the image. And welcome to BPN!

Hi Svante- I like the bird too, and the repost with the sharper eye works well. Great pose and perfect head angle for me at least. Agree with need for rotation. I would give some more room below to allow for the virtual feet under the water.

Hej guys and gals - thanks alot for your comments. It actually clarified my thinking alot.

The rock was actually very visible originally but halfcovered in slimy algae and I thought darkening it to hide the ugly looking stuff was an easy solution. I now realise it wasn't such a good idea :o. Gus idea of removing it altogether seems much better.

Not to sure how you judge that the image needs CCW rotation and would appreciate some further explanation.

John - I am fairly new at this stuff and can only keep a few things in my head at the same time. When I come home I always blame myself for not having thought about one thing or another. In this instance as I was able to slowly get closer and closer to the birds I was pretty excited and had only two thoughts in my mind - Artie wants good head angles and expose to the right. As I got closer I therefore totally missed that the legs started to get out of the image - therefore there are no more virtual feet available at this time :o.

Hi Svante. When I look at the image the water seems to be tilted to the right a bit and the reflection of the legs does not seem to be parallel to the vertical edges of the frame. It could be a optical illusion but you could try CCW rotation and see?

Nice low angle and uncluttered bg. Gus' repost with the rock removed is a nice improvement.
