As the bison were swimming across the river (see Denise's image below), the sun broke through faintly so I moved well to our right and grabbed a spot on a rock thinking that the three bison would go straight ahead and cross the road. When each hesitated at the edge of the river to consider the crowd that had gathered, I created this tight head portrait. Then came the excitement. This animal turned left and walked by me no more than three feet away. I chose to sit rather than run and it walked right by me. Whew. I did choose to vacate my perch before the next one came along. I did make on pretty cool image at 135mm as this one approached.
Image created with the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and the 1.4X II TC (hand held at 280mm) with the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1/3 stop: 1/1250 sec. at f/4. (I blew the exposure as the image out of camera was well underexposed but I recovered nicely.)
