    Default Common Moorhen Chase

March 1, 2008, Green Cay Wetlands
    Canon EOS 40D, Canon 400mm f/5.6 L USM, f/5.6, 1/1250 sec., ISO 200, AI Servo, Evaluative, handheld

You know its a slow day when you're shooting Moorhens. Used the Canon 400mm L lens to get this shot from between the boardwalk railings to try to get the lowest angle possible. It's nesting season for Moorhens and they were constantly fighting over territory.

I like the action but find the OOF bird distracting, even though he is part of the chase.

I'll take the opposite view of Axel. I think while this would be a fine image without the second oof bird, it is the second bird that takes the image up a level as it now shows behavior and action that tells a story. Well done!

Cool image, Jay. The aggressive posture of the chasing bird tells the story. This is not an easy behavior to capture,,,,,,these guys move fast and unpredictably.

Jay, a lovely image with great character and life.

I am finding that character and life are somewhat lacking here.

I love the fact that the image portrays a subject with motion and not simply a "still life image" 10 out of 10 for me.

This is a photo that really tells a story. Great catch.

The bird in the bg seems to be saying, You're outta here, dude."

The bird in the fg is definitely thinking, "Feets, do your thing."

And you call this a slow day for photos? Great action coming right at you in perfect light. In my view, the image would lose a lot without the second bird. I love behavioral interaction photos, but they seldom turn out as nice as this.

very good image, but the speed and the DOF are to slow/small.
instead of keeping ISO 200 in favour of ISO 640 you would be able to get a higher 1/2500 to freese the water drops and wing' spread.

I own 40D and its performance at ISO 640 is excellent.

I like it as presented and do feel the oof bird adds to the image Difficult obtaining pleasing chase images Big Congrats on this one Jay!!!

Great action here. The pose and positioning of the birds plus the water splashes give one a strong feel of the action.
