These little guys allways look so unhappy. Bird is about the size of a canary and moves about in small flocks. Near endemic to Southern Africa - photographed in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
The background is a sand dune.

The 'unhappy' look of Sporopipes squamifrons appears to be the result of their black lores.
In reality they are very lively and quite social birds.
Despite of missing exotic colours (for what that's worth) I like the contrast in these little guys.
In this particular portrait I like the detail (tiny white feathers around the eye) and neutral background.
Well done! You captured the detail of the scaly-looking crown feathers perfectly. It is always nice to show case the feature for which a bird is named. My experience with these birds is that they are on the ground in a group running around like sparrows, mostly with their heads down. Great capture up on a lovely perch.
Thanks for the feedback all, much appreciated. Good point Nancy it never ocurred to me about showcasing the feature of a bird's name so will bear it in mind for future photographs.
