    Default Lightroom 3 help

I have been reviewing photo critiques on this site for about a month now. I am realizing how much post processing can help or hurt an image. I currently have Lightroom 3. I have gone through a bunch of the free tutorial videos online, but I feel I need something more comprehensive and more detailed. I live in the Seattle area and Art Wolfe's associate gives a one day crash course on Lightroom 3 periodically (runs $225). I like the idea of hands on assistance, but it is a bit expensive. Any other suggestions?

    Thank you!

PS I am absolutely amazed at the quality of the pictures, critiques and assistance given on this website!

    You could try Lynda.com
I have not personally used it, but others have recommended it. It costs a little bit ($25/mo) to get total access--

I have used Lynda a few times and found it worth the while......also when I registered my Photoshop and LR3 I was sent a thank you letter from Adobe that had some free perks listed and a free 30 day trial at Lynda.com was one of the choices.

I'm going through Scott Kelby's book
The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)

It seems good. It gives his recomeneded step by step instructions for all the major things you would do in Lightroom. I'm about 2/3 through and have learned and implemented a bunch.

Thank you all for your suggestions! My goal is to get pictures I am happy with, but also feel brave enough to submit for your critiques/assistance.

    Hello There

Lightroom is a complex programme that fulfils a number of tasks of which processing one's image (in LR this is done in the Develop module) is just one function.

I learnt Lightroom by working through Classroom in a Book from the Adobe Press but I also watched a series of videos from Luminous Landscape which was quite entertaining; they have just produced an LR3 guide ...

    http://store.luminous-landscape.com/...roducts_id=245

There is also Tim Grey's comprehensive series of LR 3 videos available at ...

You seem to be mainly interested in developing images through RAW and I guess there are other resources for that since many would say you can only go so far with RAW, you also need Photoshop. Again Tim Grey might help here ...

There are also other many other books on this of which Birds As Art's Digital Basics is an obvious choice.

As someone who has been using Photoshop for over 15 years, I find the way one processes images to be a variable; there is no one way to do it but many. The final result is going to be your personal vision but this requires the necessary skills.

    With Regards

    Amano

I love taking pictures, but feel really bogged down when I get home and it's time for the post-processing. I was hoping with Lightroom I could do the organizational stuff, but also most of the adjustments needed for my pictures. When you mention Photoshop do you mean CS5 or is Elements enough? What are some of the major tools (I understand there are a lot of differences) available through Photoshop that I don't have with Lightroom? One thing I have noticed people doing on photo critiques is making adjustments to very specific areas of a photo. I have not been able to figure this out on Lightroom. Does anyone know if that can be done or is that where Photoshop comes in? So, right now if I sharpen, change exposure etc. I apply the setting to the entire picture.
Thanks again for all of your help!

    Hi

One can apply local adjustments via the K or Adjustment Brush.

Default my ongoing selfstudy into LR3

I have been using LR3 since it came out and love the program. Initially I used it to organize nearly 20000 photos off of several computers. next I used it for basic image editing such as cropping, dust spots, exposure adjustments and such. but it was clear that I was under-utilizing its power. I bought two books that were really worthwhile. One was Scott Kelby's books on LR3 and photoshop..the other was David du Chemin's Vison and Voice:refining your vision in Lightroom. both were excellent and I felt my skills went to a whole new level after doing the examples on the the downloaded images from David duChemin's book
