Here is another capture from my CO trip. This was by far the most difficult subject to capture due to virtual darkness. The only camera of the group that would AF was a Nikon. So, I was forced to manual focus. I used the flashed beaver from the Nikon to obtain focus, and then I made sure not to move! :o

Would have liked to see more of his eye in this capture but, frankly, I was happy to have him in focus. I find his pose and behavior here comical.

    Canon 1D3, Canon 100-400L @ 320mm
    F5.6, 1/200sec, ISO 1250, manual mode
    Handheld, Flash

C & C very much welcomed and appreciated.

He needs to see a dentist needs some cleaning badly.

Very nice detail and image for tough shooting conditions.

    - that's a fact and a nice image to view on a Friday.

The flash helped to upon up the shadow areas nicely.

My Goodness...it looks like he's rolling with laughter :D. I live in Colo and rarely see beavers. Where was this one? Agree with others that this is a great shot in spite of the lack of light.

Good question, Ken, and one I had thought about and hoped someone may be able to help me with. However, I don't know if this situation will ever present itself again. It was so dark that had someone not pointed out the beaver, I would not have known what it was. It just looked like a black blob in the dark. Under the circumstances, I felt pretty lucky to get the shots I did. Any suggestions from you and the rest would be grealty appreciated.

Hi Nancy. This beaver was photographed right in Estes Park, CO. I can't tell you any more than that b/c I am totally unfamiliar with the area.

Excellent image, Marina....I laughed out loud at the funny pose. Generally do not love square crops, but I think this one would work, just as another option to yours.

This is a great image of a really hard animal to photograph especially on land!! I've only seen them here in MN in the water and then you only get the top of the head. I love the pose and you did great given the circumstances.
