    Canon 40D with Canon 100-400mm.
    F7.1, 1/1000th at ISO400.

Taken at Umgeni River Mouth in Durban. Shot from a paddle ski, hand held.

Basic processing and darkend the BG a bit to make bird more prominent.

I had never heard the term "paddle ski" and had to google it to see what kind of boat that is -- looks like a fun way to explore the water. Photo could use some straightening as the shore line and the bird seems to going uphill. If you have room the photo may improve by taking some off the bottom and adding a bit more to the top.

Thanks for the comments - they are a lot of fun - can fish off them as well!!
I straightened the bird, but the water/shore line in the BG is not straight. Was considering cloning on the right side of the bird to straighten.
I left more on the bottom because of the reflection - thought it added more interest than the top.

Quick mask. Hi Gary, I prefer your OP, and the slanting BG doesnt bother me. Good detail on the pelican, and I still need to vist the gardens next time Im in Durbs.

    Hi Gary:

Any relation to Gary Jones, motorcross champion, also a super guy. QM is Quick Mask, and the best way to learn it is from our own very talented Robert O'Tooles' APTATS-1 CD, only $20 from https://store.birdsasart.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=54. Robert is a very above average instructor, and will have you fixing your photos the easy way using CS2 through CS5, and a fine gentlerman.

    Best regards ... Gus.
BTW: My wife loved her trip to Kenya in 2006, though was rather disappointed with Narobi where the travel agent accompanied them every time they left the hotel .
