Not sure on this one but I will throw it up and see if it sticks.

Captured at M.I.N.W.R on a brisk Jan. evening. The sunsets over the river can be breath taking. Colors are pretty much as seen.

    Worn out 20D, 100-400 @ 400mm, 1/500, f/8, ISO 100, HH

Works for me. Great colours. Pano crop is nice and the birds well positioned.

Colors are gorgeous. Often on this kind of a shot I will see some birds cut off at the edges -- but all these birds are in the picture -- I might be tempted to take out the two lowest birds to see if it balances better -- but looks nice as presented

I like it too. Ditto on Gary's comments re pano and bird positions. Beautiful sunset. A few of the birds in the yellow bands in the sky seem to have hot edges--not sure if that is avoidable when shooting but might be fixable in PP. Trees could use some sharpening as well. Very nice overall.

Overall it works for me, too. Some of the yellows are clipped, and I wish the flock was tail-end heavier rather than front-end (numbers-wise). Still, very nice image with wonderful colours...and just the right amount of vegetation along the bottom.

IMO you can not produce striking reds and yellows with out clipping them. If we try to make a silhouette image with histogram as s reference, we will end up making images that are limited to color space of the system and not our imagination. End of the day it is the image that gets judged and not the histogram. If we have to to clip colors in histogram to make a vibrant image IMO we should.

Classic composition Mike. Very well done.

Hi Sid, thanks for your thoughts on colours and clipping. For the most part I agree with you - we can (and do) become very critical of what may sometimes appear mundane or minute details. I find that a good thing personaly as often that is what can make good images great.

Having said this, I have made many silhouette images and the final results are free of clipped colours. Nobody has ever said it they were limited in colour or could be punched up some more or lacking vibrance. Many of those started off with clipped yellows or reds. Another thing to think of is that when printing images that have clipped colours or highlights, the results are often dissapointing (in my experience anyways). Just another reason to watch for those details.

I agree there also, and that is why I said that I liked the image, and with wonderful colours:).

    Daniel,

All I want to say is for this image clipping yellows is a requirement. You agreed it and said that is the reason why you liked it.

I guess that all I need to know.

    Thanks
    Sid

Love the sky and the colors and the crop. Just wish that more of the birds were in the full downstroke.
