Default Hello all! Greetings from Winnipeg, Manitoba

    Good day,

My name is Kevin. I signed up a few months ago and have been lurking around when I have time. I have found tons of useful info here so far. I am pretty new to dslrs, birds, bird photography and post-processing of images, so to say I am overwhelmed with the amount of learning I have to do would be an understatement. As the father of two girls under 5, I find I have limited time to put towards this pursuit, but I head out when I can. I have read several books on bird shooting (including BAA 1 and 2) and numerous websites to pick up pointers along the way. I am hoping that when the time comes that I have more free time, I will have a good base of knowledge to work from.

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and am lucky enough to live in a part of the city that offers numerous bird photo opportunities close by. I walk from home the majority of the time, but a 15 minute drive will get me to numerous large parks where things can be pretty good too. I like to shoot raptors and song birds mainly, and the occasional duck or goose.

I currently am using a Canon XSi and a Sigma 150-500 for shooting. It is alright, but not fantastic. Upgrades to body and glass are in the future plans, as well as a good flash unit. Maybe a 50D and a 400 f/5.6. I got money ear-marked for a real nice white unit, but not for divorce lawyer, so that will have to wait...probably a long time, pending I don't win the lottery.

Hopefully, I can get some images up here soon to get some feedback on and improve in this addicting hobby.

    Thanks for reading,

    Kevin

Kevin, so glad to have you with us! Yes, the amount of learning can seem overwhelming at times - especially in the beginning. Take it slow - practice one thing at a time - keep reading - it WILL all come together!

I totally understand about the money/divorce conundrum. Mine is more of a "do I want a bigger lens or do I want to eat?" issue but they all come down to the same thing - feeding our desires to be great at this craft/hobby/profession.

Looking forward to seeing your images. Feel free to start in the ETL forum (Eager to Learn) as we try to put more emphasis on the teaching aspect of things. We're so glad you joined us!

Hey Kevin, welcome to BPN my fellow canadian! I too understand your money-for-equipment issues...I started out for the first few years with a Rebel XT and a Sigma 70-300. It was great to learn the basics and get started and to this day I have many of my favorite images taken with that combo.

You are also right in stating that this is an addictive hobby!!:D

Feel free to send a Private Message (PM) to Chris Ober for him to change your user name to your real name as this is how we identify ourselves on BPN.

Again, welcome aboard, and looking forward to some of your stuff!!

Welcome Kevin. Winnipeg is a great place for bird photography, especially during migration. I frequently shoot in the Winnipeg area - if you are in the city Fort Whyte is fantastic (although someone should talk to them about thier hours...) and Oak Hammock Marsh is one of my favourite places to shoot anywhere. I look forward to seeing some of your work.

Thanks for the warm reception all.

Thanks for the reminder Daniel, my name is now correct!

Jeff, I live about a 5 minute walk from Ft Whyte (FWA) and go there frequently. It is a very good bird spot. The sunset goose flight events are something to see right now. I have only been out to Oak Hammock once (last month) in the past few years, but used to go quite a bit when I was a kid.
