Default Canon 800 mm f5.6 IS

Finally took the plunge ... mine arrived today about half an hour ago!

    Any feedback from members !?

Just in the process of putting on the lens covers but it looks as though I shall have to remove the tripod mount which I plan to do anyway to fit the Mongoose plate.

    Cheers

Am having trouble getting the tripod foot off .. the Mongoose tool starts to twist one tries to turn the screws in the Canon!
Might need to visit the tool store tomorrow!
Good weather on the way they say ... so the lens neds to be ready!

I bought a Hex set with a proper handle ... this proved to be the antidote to the spindly one supplied with the lens foot.

The first bird I saw in the new lens was a juvenile Carrion Crow ... !!

Most of them perhaps... I sold my 600mm in Sept and replaced with an 800mm and what a disaster. Right out of the box I could tell something was not right. It produced soft images with very poor contrast. I used my friends 800mm for the ICF Pro Tour Contest in April and was extremely impressed with his so I know it can be a great lens. Long story short after endless testing, and 2 trips to Canon and it was still terrible. My dealer had promised me a new one all along there just wasn't any available. Got the call yesterday, he was finally able to track one down. It's on its way now! I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

What I find exceptional about the new 800mm is less colour aberration !!

This helps to make the images sharper but also give a fuller tonal range range.

The photograph here of a female Red-breasted Flycatcher struck me with its' delicacy ... normally, this is not such a good looking bird but here I can see things I never saw before !!

    800mm @ f5.6 with 1/60'th
    exposure plus one stop
    7D
    tripod mounted

The image needs a little more working on (the branch to the right could be treated if only for the edge effect) but I include it because it was the first image that really made me realise what a great lens I had bought!!
