Default Not a Lot of Wildlife....

There is not a lot of wildlife in Yellowstone right now. But there are lots of Bison. I never thought that I could get excited photographing a bison but when this guy lay down to take a dust bath right in front of Denise Ippolito and I we both just about lost it.

This image was created with the handheld Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II (at 160mm) with the 1.4X II TC and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 200. Evaluative metering +1 stop: 1/320 sec. at f/5.6.

Dust baths are always fun to watch, and often provide good opportunites. The Bison itself is perfect, the dust takes it up a lot of notches.

Very cool artie, I hear ya about wildlife in the park, however nice shows from the wolves and bear but mostly just before sunrise, then poof everything is gone as the sun arrives. I too did some Bison this last few weeks in the park, just didn't get a great shot like yours. :)

Artie - The dust definitely adds to the image and makes it much more interesting. Sorry it has been otherwise slow. Is the fire still burning and affecting things?

Sorry to hear about the wildlife but Bison are one of my favorites. Works well for the reasons mentioned above.

What's not exciting about bison? Having never seen one, images such as this one make the think they would be alot of fun to photograph. In addition to the beast and his dust storm, I love the layered environment included in this image. Super image, Artie.

Artie, loved the dust. It is helping seprate the bison a bit from the enviornment making it pop. Exposure and processing look perfect.

I would like the bison a little lower in the frame with more space above it. Did you do some PS magic on the eye?

Thanks Rache. There are still two fires burning. We did some smoke-scape silhouettes.

Dust and a good head angle makes it! When we were there at the end of May, It was Snowstorms and Bison. We saw a lot more wildlife in the Northern End of Yellowstone. Especially the road on the East side.

Thanks Layton, We did go tot the Lamar Valley without much luck. When we got back to Jackson Hole we ran into a photography couple who had 3 different grizzlies and a wolf on a fresh killed elk....
