Canon 1DmkIII, Canon 70-200f2.8is, handheld from a vehicle. S/speed 1/1250s at F8.0, iso400. Focal length 70mm. Eval metering. Ai Servo. Cropped to straighten from 10mp to 9mp. Processed in ACR and CS5. USM. Location Tubu Tree camp, Okavango, 15 Sept 2010, 07h20am.
One of three male lion cubs that were playing around the pan in the background. I took the pic when this one climbed the termite mound to get himself into a good vantage point.

Very Nice composition Grant. Exposure looks good and like the tree line in the background.

Love this wide view, Grant. I can imagine that a large print of this image would be sweet.

    Grant,

To my mind this image may have been greatly improved if you had moved the vehicle more to the right to see if you could eliminate the palm behind. Nevertheless a different view.

Thanks for the comments, Sid and Grace. Ken, I had already taken some much tighter shots of the cub on the mound. However I was after the acacia tree in the BG, as well as the pan, and the bigger view. Thanks for commenting.

I quite liked the palm in the background as I thought it added a different, interesting graphic design to the image. I like the position of the cub, the way he is lying and his expression. He gives the feeling of grabbing the sand mound in preparation for a bit of "pouncing' practise. Also like the wider view showing the environment … always a big plus for me. A lot of nice layers to this image, the mound, the lion, the water, the green reeds then the softer line of trees in the background.

Good use of juxtaposition of the mound and large tree in the BG to create a diagonal in the image and to balance it.

Rachel, Hillary and Robert, thanks so much for the feedback. I tried to make use of the open space around the pan, and the palm and acacia treelines in the BG. We got this lion, his two brothers and three adults before sunrise. The cubs played, fought and chased each other for about fifteen minutes. It was a great morning. I will be back in the same area looking for them in two weeks time.
Glad you all liked the composition.
    cheers
