Default Two Wild Horses in Black & White

These guys were feeding on the salt flats. When playing in ACR I found that desaaturating the image resulted in a pencil/charcoal look. Opposite of what I usually do for BW conversions, I reduced contrast a bit which resulted in even more of a drawing type of look. Curious what others think. Handheld from a kayak, 40D, Bigma @ 500mm, iso 800, f/8.0, 1/400.

I agree, the image looks like a pencil drawing. The reflection in the water leads me to the horses while the subdued background grasses and sky provide a good stage for the more dominate horses, just the way many artists would render the scene. Very good!

A very lovely image, Bob; nicely seen and well presented as b&w. You're doing a nice job from that kayak. Looking forward to more.

Hi Bob - love the low shooting angle courtesy of the kayak. The BW and the charcoal/drawing effect is very nice.
    Another wall hanger - IMHO!!

Beautiful pastoral scene Bob. This location must have been magic. Love the BW conversion. Many ways to do it but this one hit the mark I think. It is very minor but if you were trying to think of how to improve an already great image, I wonder if a bit more separation in the two horses would improve?

I agree with John -it's a beautiful B&W and if there were a bit more difference in tones or more of a space between the neck/head of the first one and the one behind it that would make this even stronger. That said...wow. It's awesome just how it is presented. I love to play with black and white images and have found that I usually do prefer a desaturated image over a black and white "conversion". This is subtle and peaceful in both its environment and its processing.

It is the one thing that I think would make a difference, John, Julie. But I'm not sure how to create greater separation in the photo. Suggestions anyone?

Repost: I did some dodging on the back horse along where the two meet and some burning on the front horse, also where they meet. Better separation now?

    Nice one Bob,

I like the low angle and the effects you've used, the repost is an improvement on a very nice image.

I love what you've done with this - the pencil/charcoal effect is gorgeous - and the separation you added makes it even nicer. wonderful photo.
