    Default Polar Bear with Cubs

Just got back from an amazing trip to photograph polar bears at Kaktovik, AK. Due to an arctic storm water levels in and around Kaktovik and Barter Island were unusually high and cut down our vehicular access to bow-head whales bone pile. Only option left was to cruise along the slushed up inlet and scout for bears on the beach. Our guides did an exceptional job navigating in 2inch thick ice and placing us in strategic points. Working in 30 mph winds at 20 degrees was the biggest challenge for me.

Here is an image of a sow and her cubs photographed on first day. Technically, I should have positioned myself a little lower for a uniform background. I did not feel comfortable lying flat on the ground 50 yards from a sow with cubs.

Sid, You have captured here something amazing. I love the color of the sand against the white bears, and it works with blues in the BG. All bears are looking your way inquisitively. The light is very soft. The image is appears candid. THe level from which you captured it seems to have worked perfectly. Congratulations on this one! Sounds as athough you worked hard for it.

    Sid,

This is a beauty, good light and nice pose by the bears, the driftwood adds greatly.

I do not blame you not wanting to lay down 50 yards is a very short distance for a Polar Bear;)

Can I ask why you used F10? I might run some NR on the BG.

Cub on the right was rolling all around I though F10 will give me enough DOF for all 3 of them.
I guess one more round of noise reduction on the waves..

Hi Sid, like the interaction and general overall feel of this one.

We can all look back with hindsight when we view our shots and yes, a lower POV would have been better, but it really doesn't detract that much I feel. I like the inclusion of the bit of drift wood, plus you have managed to get some catchlight in the eyes which really helps and is not always easy with PB's. Personally, my only wish is that they were not shot on pack ice, seeing them in this locations seems slightly 'alien' if you know what I mean, however the great thing is you have actually seen them, which is a real privilege IMHO. ;)

    HI Sid
Nice catch under difficult circumstance. I love the eye contact given by all three bears ,the soft light and the nice exposure on the bears! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Steve. Planning another trip to Kaktovik in July 2011 especially for bears on ice packs.

Sid - I definitely don't blame you for not lying down 50 yards away especially when it seems like you had their attention. Congrats on a great capture. Love that all 3 are looking at you, great detail and sharpness.

Sid- This is a stunner. Beautiful light and composition and terrific interest level.

I would only say that local guides or not, firearm protection or not, I would not have gone that close to any Polar Bear let alone a female with cubs. I've had a Polar Bear interaction at camp in the high Arctic.

Steve- This one made on a beach. Both beach and pack ice are perfectly natural and normal habitats for Polar Bears so I'm a little confused.

WOW. All three in beautiful light looking right at you. I, for one, am not spending much time looking at the water or wondering about the shooting angle. The bears are enough for me. Excellent capture in difficult conditions. Cheers!

This has such a nice feel to it. Gorgeous light showcasing their colors beautifully. The beach setting with its different textures, colors and driftwood compliment the bears and back ground nicely. I like the positions and attentive looks of all three but wish the cubs face on the right wasn't partially shaded.

Beautiful image. I especially like the light & being able to see the bottom of the right cub's foot. Well captured.

You are right on that. A young curious male came so close to us we had no way of getting out with out hurting ourselves and bear if some thing went wrong. We got carried away while shooting and suddenly realized he was closer than expected.

An excellent photograph Sid. A great contrast between the warm sand and the cool water in the BG. I don't think a uniform BG would've looked better on this as the waves provide a nice transition of color and texture between the sky and sand.

    Nice photo Sid!

Good light. I like the mood and the depth of field here. Lower perspective would have been better but not a deal breaker here. Thanks for sharing.

I am going backwards from your other post Sid, but this is another hit out of the park. Great head turns on all three, they all lust pop right out of the BG. Well done.

Hi Sid, what a shot. Nothing I could add to what others have already stated, but this image jumped at me as a thumbnail, and when I opened it up, I just said Wow. TFS
