I don't really like the steep angle but thats where the woodpeckers happened to be on this morning. I desaturated the reds a tad.

The angle doesn't bother me much Scott. Nice job with the reds. I do find the image to be slightly underexposed however. Not sure if this was shot in a priority mode or with manual exposure, but you generally need to add some light when photographing avian subjects with black feathers against a blue sky. In this specific instance you didn't have any whites to worry about, so another 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop would have helped. A little Shadows/Highlights work can also help here.

Nice bird and head angle, I also don't feel bothered with the shooting angle. Doug's advise are wise. I would prefer a 3:2 ratio for this image, especially since the sky is not offering anything interesting.

Nice pose and the angle's not that bad. I do wonder about how big a crop it is since I can see a fair amount of noise in the sky and lacking of detail in the feathers. :)

    Hi Scott:

Lovely bird you have here with gorgeous colors. Agree this bird is a tad dark, but an easy fix. The angle doesn't bother me. I realize how difficult these birds are to find and photograph, and they usually appear high on tree stumps. However, the critical focus appears to be on the bird's "thigh" rather that it's head which is why the head looks a bit soft.

You did well with this capture and a little tweaking could improve it.

I like the shot, but can you do anything about the underexposure?
