    Question The chase

This image is pretty much straight from the camera. All I have done is straightened it, done an autolevels in CS3 and reduced to size. What I'd like is some advice on how to bring the best of this image out including crops etc... I am happy to provide a .cr2 raw file of it if anyone wants to have a play. Other than that, any critique would be appreciated thanks.

Hi CJ shoot over an CR file and will be glad to give it a try Can send to my email If you have any problem sending try mega uploads Great and its free !!!

I lie the position of the two birds Good action The birds merging with the dark bg is distracting Always need to look at the bg since it will become part of your image Regarding the birds I'm sure lots can be done !!!!

    Got RAW file

The first thing to note on the raw is exposure it is 2/3 under exposed (or more) With that start all goes downhill from there You will be increasing noise and getting in trouble with contrast and shadows

I set the black/white point in ACR Did son levels Straighten the horizon and cropped Then converted In PS just did curves adjustments One to lighten the image since the under wing areas were dark then another for bumping contrast a bit more

Would strongly suggest a couple of things Set up your light angle before making the image This will insure good illumination for the bird Second check the histogram If you keep shooting into the same direction once you have one looking good all will be good We want data on the fifth box (the right one)

Wow, what a difference, THANK YOU. It's quite strange really how MOST of my images are underexposed. I generally use the camera (400D) in Av mode and with this shot, centre weighted average. I'm not 100% sure of how to use the histogram so don't. I will ensure I take the time in the very near future to learn.

As for setting the black and white point, I have read different ways of doing it, I'd be interested in hearing yours. The way I have been doing it lately is with a new levels adjustment layer, holding the alt key while sliding the black and white sliders and bringing the respective colour into view, just.
