I spent a good 3 hours with this Red-tailed Hawk last weekend as I watched it hunt....very patient to say the least. One small ground dweller lost it's life during the 3 hours...not sure what it was though.

Self critique: The blue patches bother me but I don't like altering my images, I wish the head was turned a bit more towards me, shady spot across the mid-section of the Hawk but I do like the play of light and shadows in images and felt this one had enough light to work and I like the raised foot.

The bent over talon tells me this is a Hawk I've been photographing since early 2008.

    Duane:

It is really neat to be able to follow a particular individual.
Dappled light is often a challenge to carry off, but I think this image works well. The lighting on the bird is even enough I might consider toning down the bright spot on the trunk.
I appreciate you don't like to alter your images, but sometimes even the very best photographers can't control all aspects of the image, so toning down the bright blue spots would be an option.
In this image, I think the bright trunk is the more bothersome of the two.

Hope to see more of this beautiful bird.

    Cheers

    Randy

Good self critique and pretty good job of working with uneven light. For the repost, I addressed Randy's major concern. I like the raised foot and the look on the bird's face.

Looks good as presented I think and the repost is an improvement too. You've dealt with the dappled light really well. Agree that a tone down/clone out of the blue would be preferable if it was within your ethics:)
