I spent some time watching a clan of hyena's fighting over something in the tall grass.I manage to position my vehicle in to try and get a head on shot of one of the clan with their kill. ISO 800 F 8 1/500 th. , Canon 1d MK 3 , 500 mm F4 Lens , panning plate and bean bag on vehicle window. Small nit for me is grass in the RHS of face .

Andrew - I like this image. Makes the hyena look cute (often difficult to do). Great perspective. I might take a little from the rhs. What's in the grass to the left of the hyena, is it his tail or the ear of another hyena?

Hi Andrew, I like the way the hyena is framed by the grass, and nice colours in this image. Agree with Rachel that you captured the hyena in a nice pose..which is especially difficult when they are feeding. I am uncertain whether a tighter crop would work better? Rachel, does the ear not belong to the creature being eaten?

Excellent work Andrew. The sharpness of the hyena and the prey framed in the grass really makes this jump off the screen. I really like the grass too. One of the best images like this I have seen.

Grant - I guess the ear could be from the prey. I just assumed the hyena had done a snatch and grab of a large piece the way they so often do.:)

Your positioning to get the clear angle has really paid off Andrew.

Very clear, good action well caught. I would add some back to the top if you have it in the original.

thanks all for the great feedback. It looks quiet deceiving but this is part of the prey item, a warthog which they had trapped and killed in the long grass. We could only hear the drama and later they moved closer to wards us and crossed over the track. There was a larger hyena following but i only appears in later frames. I have had a small crop and added some back as is below?
