    Default New Macro Lens

Sigma just announced a new one. This should be interesting.

Ian, I was just about to bite the bullet and buy the Canon 180mm F/3.5 Macro when I read your post and did some serious "looking into" the Sigma and all I have heard is good. I will wait until my dealer has one in stock (I have put one on hold) and make a final decision then, every time I pick up the Canon I think this bloody thing is heavy.

I will PM you and post here if I buy one.

I would love a longer Macro, but it's going to be a while before I can afford one. I don't know if I've just been lucky, but I have 3 Sigma lenses (50-150mm f/2.8, 10-20mm f/4-5.6, 100-300mm f/4) and both Sigma TC's and have been happy with all of them.

Please do let us know what you decide!

BTW, I have yet to see a price on the new Sigma. Did they tell you?

Ian I have been using the original Canon 100 f/2.8 Macro for some years and it is a fantastic lens but they releases a L model 100 with IS which I bought and promptly sold I did not like it at all but it has caused the price of the original 100 to drop, you may want to have a look at that lens.

    Check them out here.

I have the original 100 f/2.8 Macro and love it. I just dream of owning something a bit longer so I don't scare the bugs away :). What didn't you like about the new one?

Ian I found it felt cheap and plasticky compared to the non L and the IS was no use to me anyway as for Macro I use tripods and focusing rails plus it took me a while to get comfortable with the original and as I am an OLD dog, new tricks can be problematic. :)

I strongly suspect I will buy the Sigma.

    Ian -

I have the current version of the Sigma 150mm macro which I actually use frequently with the Sigma 1.4x TC (to get further away from the subject) and it's quite sharp. I would think that adding the OS would make it even more flexible than it already is.

    Chris -

Yes, that image was made with the Sigma APO 1.4x converter. Handheld with the 7D, ISO 400, 1/1250 @ f7.1.. It really is quite a good combination! I'm really pleased with it!
