    Default Curlew Probing

This image was taken at Ft. Desoto, Florida, several days ago at about 9am EST. This Curlew is very tolerant and allows close approch.

    Nikon D90, 300 mm f/5.6, 1/800, ISO 100 with tripod. Used Active D-Lighting.
Cropped by about 20%, slight lightening and color boost (Capture NX2), and sharpening. No cloning or cleaning.

    Comments appreciated.

Hi Ann - looking good - cant say that I have used active lighting that much. You can post your image at 800 pixels on the longest side, will make it a little easier to evaluate.
Colour and exposure look good, like the pose and the catchlight in the eye.
For my personal tastes the bird is a little too centred - would like more space up front just to get it out of the centre of the frame.
Im sure some will prefer some clean up of the reeds in the water :)
    Keep em coming :)

Agree with Lance regarding the bird being a bit too centred. I think cleaning up the reeds in the water to the left would make it look a bit bare compared with the right. A bigger image would be good but from what I can see, detail, colours and exposure look great.:D

Hi Ann- Ditto, would like to see a bigger version. Either 800 wide or 1024 wide works well. As a general rule a more pleasing layout gives more room above the subject than below. In this case you have about equal amounts. The logic is you give more room in the implied direction of movement. In this case there isn't much movement implied but if there were, the bird would likely move to the right and/or up (burrowing into the ground is not generally an option for birds!). Using this same logic, more room on the right than the left would work, and this would place the subject out of the centre.

Nice bird with a totally unbelievable bill!

    Thanks for the comments.
I have had a problem with uploading the correct size. When I specify the pixel width of 1024, and save as a JPEG, I end up with a file larger than 200 kb. Any advice? I use NX2.
