    Default Sharpening question

I have used luminosity sharpening for a while now - I duplicate the layer and choose 'luminosity' followed by USM. If required I create a layer mask and selectively sharpen. My question is how does this differ from switching to Lab mode and sharpening the Lightness channel.

IMO the effect is very similar and does not warrant changing to LAB mode for sharpening. Learn to use an Edge Mask as well and you will be a happy camper.

Sorry for saying that I don't understand the above discussion. I would however be keen to be enlightened :o.

Some questions that pops into my mind:
    - What is the advantage of sharpening only the Lightness channel ?
    - Will sharpening in Luminosity Mode only effect the "light channel" ?
    - Finally what is meant by "Edge Mask" and how do you set it up?

    Hi,

Whilst the subject of sharpening is up. Has anybody tried using split frequency type sharpening? This is a method where by you split the image into the component parts, ie, colour and texture channels. Only just beginning to understand the full implications myself. Widely used in high end fashion retouching but would seem equally useful on bird images.

    regards.

An Edge Mask is used to restrict sharpening to specific areas containing detail, rather than to the entire image and/or smooth areas with little to no detail present. Conversely, noise reduction can be restricted to smooth areas by using a Surface Mask (inverse of Edge Mask).

Sharpening in Luminosity Mode effects detail w/o inducing color fringing problems.
