This one is shot in a open place in the forrest nearby me home. It was cloudy that day so I had too use a high iso.

Willem, This is a lovely shot, great muted light, fabulous BG. Detail and HA are also great. I would crop the LHS a little bit as IMHO there is a bit too much space there. Great sharpness at 1/100 on beanbag. Some people would recommend cloning out the ring but its OK for me. Love the moss the the rotting branch just conjours up a damp mossy forest. I wish we had this specias in Ireland - we have loads of damp forests though :)

    Lovely image and well done

Sharp, detailed and very nicely exposed! The perch with the little stubs of green makes a nice environment.

I have a soft spot for nuthatches...this one looks almost exactly as our Red-breasted ones. Very nice image design overall. Comp is very subjective, but I find there is the right amount of canvas at left, and the mosses nicely balance that area. I suppose you could crop a tiny bit, just enough to hide the vertical moss skimming that left edge. For me though it is at the bottom that needs a bit more trimming - possibly half the space between lowest toe and bottom edge. This would remove a good chunk of the distracting OOF broken branch.

Another thing look out for is that with the body angled away a bit more head turn, to at least parallel to the sensor, would have been ideal. Great colours throughout and I love the forest feel to your image. Exposure and details look good. A post-processing artefact needs tidying-up in top left corner. When you say high ISO how high was it (just curious as you didn't write it down)?

In addition to the excellent comments above (ditto Dan's comments) I would add that the o-o-f portion of the perch--the broken branch in the lrc that is protruding toward us--is quite distracting. O-o-f elements this side of the sharp focus on the subject almost always cause big problems. Lastly, the bird--from where I am sitting--could use a bit of sharpening and a bit more punch to the middle tones. I do love the new growth on the old log.

Love the perch. Wish you had lowered the lens just a bit.

    Willem,

Nice capture. I find trying to get a decent shot of these guys infuriating.

I agree that that the amount of canvas to the left is perfect.

It is most likely something you could not influence, but I think having the bird slightly further along the perch to the left would have overcome the only major issues I have: the crossing stump and the tail, and the oof broken branch referred to by Artie.

Were you in a hide for this? Or had you pre-fed?

    Willem,
Your image really caught my eye. Love the wet darkish feeling I get from this.
The only thing I would touch if it was mine, I would nip a little off the bottom.

    Cheers,

Willem, Go to Selective Color and add 2 points of BLACK to both the BLACKS and the NEUTRALs. I do that so often that I created an action via my f9 key so that I can apply it with one touch.
