Here's the same little guy (I previously posted) just a few moments prior to the other photo, not looking as interesting, but I think the composition works much better. If only he could've ruffled his feathers while standing here!

I think this one works quite well, Ian. Good comp and I love the yellows and blues in the water. The higher vantage point gave you a percect look at the reflection and allowed you to avoid unwanted distractions crossing behind the heron. Nice placement of your subject and balanced well with the three darker areas at top. Good habitat image, well done!
I like this one much better. Love the sharpness and the bright blues and yellows and the REFL. My only wish is for a slightly better head position with the head rotated just a bit more towards us. As presented the tip of the bill is a bit farther away from us than the eye.

Daniel & Arthur - thank you both for your comments. I think this one came out much better as well and agree on the head angle. Bird photography is not as easy as you two make it look! There are so many factors that go into a successful shot and I'm learning that while you can't control the light, "models" and other factors, there are a lot of things the photographer can do to get the best shot possible when everything out of your control lines up. As always I appreciate the feedback.
Hey Ian, Once you are aware of the principles it becomes easier to learn to push the shutter button at the right time. That did not apply here as you pushed the shutter button in response to the strike and you were at the mercy of the head angle Gods.
